Illustration of God's Light

In our pastor's discussion during Sunday morning class yesterday, he gave an illustration that I thought was very insightful. He equated God's light to a prism. As God sheds His pure, holy light down on us, His children here on earth, the light passes through the prism of our lives and refracts in such a way that it emanates the full spectrum of light to those around us—different aspects of light from different people shining on those in the community of faith and throughout the world community.

I thought that this illustration was quite beautiful and encouraging that each of us as individuals don't have to feel forced to be everything, perfectly or completely to share God's love and light with the community around us.

What do you think?

I'm sorry ... I think I've become way too jaded to appreciate the beauty in the analogy. I hear too much of a particular bishop in it ("We are clay jars, meant to be broken" or some other garbage like that). There's a fine line there, of reflecting God's light in the true, beautiful sense vs. a sort of "universalism" (all light is good, all different kinds of reflection are fine ... we all point to the same God, blah blah blah). Oh, I'm horrible!! I trust your judgment and interpretation on this one, since you were there and I clearly wasn't. Isn't it so bad, where I've come?! :)

Sue, thank you so much for your honesty. Your genuine feelings and experiences are what we are looking for and sharing in our Living Room Conversations. I'm so sorry for the painful experiences that you've had, yet let me encourage you that you are not alone in having negative experiences. As we continue to converse, perhaps you will find God's grace is still very real in the midst of the pain of our brokenness.

I like the analogy, very much. We can all be light for a hurting world in so many ways. I know that we will never be perfect in this fleshly vessel, but I do believe the word teaches to strive for perfection. I don't believe we should feel comfortable of where we are with the Lord but always feel that we can draw closer to his presence, and continue becoming a greater Light to a world that is so dark. this world is so full of artificial lighting and people start thinking that everything is ok with what they illuminate this world with not taking into consideration the values and morelos of the God of the universe.

God Bless
